What is oral surgery?
Any type of procedure that is performed in or around the mouth can be classified as oral surgery. One of the most commonly performed types of oral surgery is wisdom teeth removal. Oral surgeons are also qualified to place dental implants and perform jaw realignment surgeries.
What does it take to become an oral surgeon?
Oral surgeons are required to complete either four years of medical school or dental school before they can complete a residency in oral surgery. This residency typically lasts about four years. Oral surgeons are also required to pass a board examination before they can legally practice.
Who might need an oral surgeon?
A patient who has been having problems with his or her wisdom teeth will need to see an oral surgeon. In fact, anywhere from 75 to 80 percent of people will need to get their wisdom teeth removed. People who have been suffering from TMJ may also need to see an oral surgeon.
